Window protester has bike stolen
THIEVES have stolen a bicycle that was placed in a shop window to replace an artist’s paintings in protest at a steep business rates bill.
Artist Tim Wheeler had taken down his paintings and left a couple of old bikes in a listed Liverpool Road shopfront after being told he would have to pay business rates if he displayed his work.
His story featured in the Tribune recently but the thieves have now kicked in the shop’s front door and taken Mr Wheeler’s wife Deborah’s bike.
A number of paintings, which had been taken down and were turned away from the window, were untouched.
Mrs Wheeler said: “They broke in at about 6.45am. The people at the back heard the door being kicked in. They broke the lock off it. They took my bike but the neighbours must have disturbed them. They didn’t take any paintings. It was weird timing.”
Islington Police were called but said there were no witnesses and they had no leads.
An Islington Police spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that police were called at 07:51 on Friday, October 2, to reports of a non residential burglary at an address in Liverpool Road. “A beige ladies bike worth £150 was stolen. No other property was taken.” |
