Vote to keep cameras rolling
TOWN Hall meetings will continue to be broadcast on the internet after councillors voted to continue funding filming.
Last week the Tribune reported how rebel Lib Dem councillor Andrew Cornwell had offered to film council meetings on his home video camera and post them on YouTube.
He made the offer just before last week’s full council meeting, which was due to hear a report suggesting the £12,000 annual cost of webcasting meetings was too high and demand not high enough.
But the offer proved unnecessary after Labour opposition councillors pushed through an amendment to find funds to continue the scheme.
Labour councillor Phil Kelly, who moved the amendment, said: “People should have a right to know what decisions are made by their elected representatives.
“I was pleased to support the trial of webcasting.”
Cllr Cornwell said of the report: “It’s very disappointing and I question the huge costings.”
Council leader Lib Dem councillor Terry Stacy, whose party abstained from the vote, said: “I would welcome Andrew’s offer with open arms, if he can help save the council the £12,000.”
The report into the webcast pilot said there had been “poor take-up” by members of the public. |
