‘Keep health centre’ says Palin
MONTY Python actor Michael Palin – whose nationally renowned Centre for Stammering Children is in the Finsbury Health Centre (FHC) – has spoken of his desire to see the building kept in public hands.
NHS Islington plans to sell off the Grade I listed building designed by celebrated architect Berthold Lubetkin to private developers claiming refurbishment is too expensive.
Mr Palin’s Centre for Stammering Children, which is based in the Pine Street building, will move to a replacement building in Holloway as a result of the closure.
But speaking to the Tribune at the launch of a DVD to help teachers support stammering children, at Thornhill Primary School on Tuesday, Mr Palin said he was reluctant to see the building slip away. He said: “It’s a very famous building. I’d love to see it retained because it’s such an important building but as with all these things there’s probably a lot of work needed.”
When asked if he wanted his centre to remain in the FHC, Mr Palin said: “That’s a decision to be taken by the people that work there. I love the building sentimentally because it’s where we started but there’s a case to be made for better larger premises.” |
