‘There’s no way we can allow art on the highway’

PAVEMENT artist Steve Edgoeley was surrounded by fascinated pupils from Elizabeth Anderson School when he drew his colourful pictures on the concrete in Upper Street at the Angel this week.
Sadly, Steve, from Archway, who can normally be seen outside the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, will eventually have to wash the art away.
“People always ask me why can’t I keep the drawings that I do on the pavement,” he said. “But I suppose that would be illegal. It’s a shame to have to rub them out because they can take me up to three hours to draw.”
The pupils whose school is nearby even put a few coins into the hat.
A spokeswoman for Islington council said that if the art wasn’t removed at the end of the day, it could be considered a breach of part of the Highways Act 1980.
