Fill up the empty flats
• FORTY-SIX council homes are to be built in Islington with the help of £4million from the Labour government. Our two Labour MPs, Jeremy Corbyn and Emily Thornberry, and our Labour councillors played a crucial role in making this happen.
They have all campaigned for years for this money for new council housing, and for at least half the homes in developments of 10 units and over to be affordable.
This new money from Labour is the borough’s share of £127million shared by 47 councils to build more than 2,000 homes, with £2.5billion allocated nationally to provide 20,000 homes and work for 45,000 people longer term.
In order to house the 13,000 people on the council’s waiting list, Mr Corbyn is pressing for local powers and finance to buy properties on the open market. Given the dire housing shortage in Islington, the Lib Dem council should be doing a lot more to house people in empty properties.
