Let CCTV fight crime
• I AM pleased to see that the police have renewed the dispersal order on the Elthorne estate and that Homes for Islington will be putting in place new CCTV in the area.
But I think people deserve to have a clear idea of what the Lib Dems think about these measures to fight crime.
It’s not just that the Lib Dems in Parliament voted against dispersal zones and it’s not just that the Lib Dem council refused to implement CCTV for many years – or even that too many of our cameras are more busy enforcing parking than fighting crime.
In June of this year, the Lib Dems’ parliamentary candidate, Councillor Rhodri Jamieson-Ball, opposed CCTV, saying that it did not help stop crime. I believe this is wrong and that these mixed messages do nothing to reassure our community where confidence in law enforcement is so low.
For me, the message is clear – the powers we now have to fight crime are a good thing for our community and the measures on the Elthorne are another example of this.
