Cut breast cancer toll
• BREAST cancer touches so many families. One out of every nine women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in our lives, and we all know people who have been affected.
We are so lucky to have the NHS offering breast cancer screening for all women aged 50 to 70. But even so, thousands of women are dying needlessly because breast cancer is not detected in time.
The local NHS is working hard to tackle cancer, but there is always more to be done. Screening is a vital first step, but we must ensure that women who need treatment are getting to see a specialist quickly.
Early treatment saves lives. At present less than half the women referred get to see a consultant within two weeks; it’s just not good enough.
