Williams plaque row to carry on
CHOOSING a location for Kenneth Williams’s plaques is threatening to turn into a right carry on.
A row has broken out between councillors in Camden and Islington over who can stake a greater claim to the comic actor’s legacy.
The Tribune reported last week that Williams – best known for his appearances in the Carry On films – is to be the subject of three plaques at former Camden homes, including properties on Marchmont Street and Osnaburgh Street.
Now bosses at Islington Town Hall are vying for English Heritage to unveil a plaque in Bingfield Street, near Caledonian Road, where the comedian was born in 1926. Islington Council leader Terry Stacy said: “When I found out that English Heritage were planning on commemorating him with a blue plaque, it seemed natural to me that it should come to his birthplace in Islington.”
But King’s Cross councillor Jonathan Simpson, who campaigned for the plaque unveiled above Williams’s childhood home in Marchmont Street two weeks ago, said it would be a “great shame” to lose the plaque to Camden’s neighbours.
English Heritage is yet to confirm the location. |
