Scrap this allowance• I NOTICED Labour MP, Emily Thornberry, made her first speech to the House of Commons for more than a month – to fret about her communications allowance in the wake of the Kelly Report on the MPs’ expenses scandal.
That may not be surprising as she spent more than £17,000 from the communications allowance last year – a huge amount, and the ninth highest of all 645 MPs. I was delighted to read that the Kelly Report has recommended the communications allowance is scrapped. The sooner that happens, the better.
One cause for concern is that, looking at her incidental office costs allowance, she has also spent thousands to produce, deliver and consult on “creative concepts” for her “annual report”. I’d like to know whether that will be looked at under the new rules as well.
