Call for ‘eyesore’ bridge clean-up
IT’S dark, gloomy and encrusted with more than 100 years of graffiti and dirt, but for many visitors the dilapidated railway bridge is their only lasting memory of Finsbury Park.
Now Network Rail is being urged to clean up the Seven Sisters Road bridge, give it a new coat of paint and put up a sign saying: “Welcome to Finsbury Park.”
Courtney Bailey, chairman of Finsbury Park Business Forum, and Labour councillor Phil Kelly launched the campaign on Tuesday.
Mr Bailey said: “The bridge, we believe, dates back to the early 20th century or before, but I don’t expect it has been cleaned much over the years. We’ve been told that they can’t even use a high-pressure hose on the brickwork for fear it weakens the concrete. But everyone agrees it really lets the area down. “We have a nice new station and Finsbury Park is finally going up in the world. But the bridge is an ugly eyesore and puts people off.”
Cllr Kelly said that Islington Council had installed lights beneath the bridge which improve the gloom. “It’s now down to Network Rail to give it a much-needed clean.”
A spokesman for Network Rail said that, although cleaning was a good idea, it was not a priority for the company. |
