Death junction ‘dithering’
Transport chiefs are urged to act after latest incident at blackspot
TRANSPORT bosses have been warned to “stop dithering” after a second serious crash at the junction where one of Islington’s most highly regarded activists was killed.
A 29-year-old woman was taken to the Royal London Hospital after she was hit by a white van at the junction of Holloway Road and Fieldway Crescent on Tuesday.
She was crossing the same junction of Holloway Road where Lisa Pontecorva was crushed by a cement mixer lorry on September 12, 2008.
At the time Transport for London (TfL) pledged to “introduce new safety measures” – but more than a year later nothing has been done.
Caroline Russell, chairwoman of pedestrians’ lobby group Islington Living Streets, said: “This is a badly designed junction. We have had one fatality and now a very serious incident. Transport for London has been dithering on this.”
She added: “It is deeply shocking in the light of Lisa Pontecorvo’s death.”
Ms Pontecorvo, 64, was wheeling her bicycle across busy Holloway Road, at the junction with Fieldway Crescent, when she was dragged under the lorry. She died instantly. At the time, a TfL spokeswoman said “a feasibility study is underway to introduce new road safety measures” at the junction.
Calls from road safety groups to alter the confusing road markings at the junction have not been acted on.
A TfL spokesman said this week: “TfL is currently investigating a number of options to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians at the junction of Holloway Road, Fieldway Crescent and Madras Place.
“We are working with Islington Council and other key stakeholders to redesign the junction and hope to agree a design and implement it as soon as possible.”
Islington Living Streets and Islington Cyclists Action Group are set to meet with the council on Friday to discuss their concerns.
A police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 5.31am on Tuesday to reports of a road traffic collision in Holloway Road, near St Mary Magdalene Church.
“A 29-year-old female pedestrian was involved in a collision with a white Daf van.
The victim was taken to the Royal London Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.” |
