Time for a square deal
• ALL major new developments in Islington have a clause in their legal agreements to prevent new residents from applying for parking permits (Film-makers in battle to keep newcomers out of parking spots, November 27). All developments except this one in Arundel Square.
Residents were always told there was an underground car park and no street parking, so gave their support to the development on this understanding. When the show flats in Arundel Square opened, all prospective purchasers were advised that they would not be eligible for a parking permit. Unlike a lot of other properties, there is a large underground car park, which could probably contain all the cars of new residents, given Islington’s relatively low rates of car ownership. It seems – probably through an administration error at Islington Council – that the parking permits clause was left out of the legal agreement. The council has written to the developer asking for this clause to be added as a deed of variation. The developer is under no legal obligation to do this, but we hope it understands its moral obligation to do so.
It is not being asked to agree to anything it didn’t already assume it had to. It has spent a lot of money on “completing the square” but it would be a shame to make it a place where there is a parking nightmare, while the underground car park is potentially not being used to full capacity.
Interestingly, the major developer is United House, which is the council’s major Partner for Improvement. As they have a relationship that will continue over 20 years (not to mention a £700million-plus deal) surely both parties can come to a mutually beneficial arrangement to sign the deed of variation without further delay.
