Business booms at independent shop
BOOK lovers shocked by the threatened closure of Borders at the Angel have some good news to celebrate.
Independent bookshop Clerkenwell Tales is ready to fill the gap. The shop, which opened in July in Exmouth Market, is reporting brisk business in the run-up to Christmas. Customers include journalist Lynn Barber and TV architect Maxwell Hutchinson.
It is owned by Peter Ho, 37, who cashed in his savings and took out a large loan for the shop six months ago.
Peter, from Surrey, said: “I’ve always believed there is room for small independent bookshops in Islington, despite the fact we have lost so many over the years.”
The shop stocks a lot of books on design, because a large number of architects live locally. Peter, who once worked with Waterstone’s, will be organising a book club in the New Year. Rather than being held in readers’ homes, it will meet in a restaurant. |
