'Fans will forgive an empty trophy cabinet'
Legend says Europe more important
than silverware
A TROPHY-LESS season would not be a disaster for Arsenal,
according to Gunners legend Kenny Sansom.
The full back, who captained Arsenal to Littlewoods Cup glory
in 1987, says European qualification is more important.
If you are going to not win anything, it is this season,
he told the New Journal. The main thing is to qualify
for the Champions League.
Sansom, speaking at the headquarters of England sponsors Nationwide
ahead of Saturdays FA Cup loss to Bolton, said Arsenal
fans would be disappointed by a trophy-less season.
But he said they would not panic because they had plenty to
look forward to with the new stadium, Thierry Henrys pledge
to stay and the possibility of summer signings.
He added: I think Arsenal fans, if we dont win anything,
are not going to be that concerned given everything that is
going to be going on in the summer.
Sansom did however, say Spurs could finish ahead of the Gunners
this season. He added: Jol talks common sense and has
got a very exciting squad and I think there is no doubt Tottenham
can finish above Arsenal this season.
Spurs will have to halt a run of four games without a win however,
starting with Charlton on Sunday. |
