A special
young man
TOMMY Winston would seem to have been quite a special
young man. His family and neighbours only have good words to
say about him and he has obviously left a favourable impression
on all who knew him.
I was particularly touched to hear about how he helped rescue
Susan Michies daughter from a lift where she was threatened
by older boys (Tommy, well never forget you, January 19).
Tommys mother also recounts how the police had once called
to her to say that her son and a friend had helped out another
girl who had been mugged, and that hed held the guy responsible
down until the police arrived (Tributes to a good son, January
12).
These stories about a youth who seemed to have been so exemplary
is an inspiration not only for other youths, but the whole community.
I would have been proud to have such a grandson.
His mother is right of course. There arent enough youth
facilities in that part of town. Council estate after council
estate are crammed together. Community facilities are constantly
being closed down or reduced by a greedy, inconsiderate local
council.
I would like to see some youth facility erected or revised in
and around Talacre dedicated to Tommy Winston.
He should not have died in vain. Perhaps his death could help
other young people in this area.
