A PLAYGROUND has been ripped up to make way for contractors
preparing to repair a Swiss Cottage council estate.
Tenants living in the Bray tower of the Chalcot Estate in Adelaide
Road are now calling for an alternative play space to be provided.
They want a former doctors surgery at the foot of the
tower to be turned into a youth club.
Teenagers made their point on Tuesday afternoon by chaining
themselves to the railings bordering the tarmac where the playground
used to be.
Conservative councillor Jonny Bucknell, whose name is among
a 200-signature petition for help, said: The estimation
for converting the surgery in the past has been £100,000
but we should be able to get something up and running for less
than that. If we cant have the playground, then there
should be an alternative.
A council press official said: We are sorry for the loss
of the play area by Bray Tower on the Chalcot Estate caused
by the contractors site offices. The available space for
the site set up is very limited and so the playground equipment
cannot be reinstated. However, the football pitch is to be reinstated
at Bray by the end of March. |
