George Blake's betrayal
I AM surprised your story enthusiastically advertising
Michael Randles talk did not mention that George Blake,
whose escape from prison he assisted, was serving a sentence
that, in the words of the House of Lords, reflected the
extreme gravity of the harm brought about by his betrayal of
secret information (The spy who went over the wall, 23
March).
Blake received 42 years imprisonment each year
representing an agent whose death he was known to have caused.
Randle was not charged with treason, merely with assisting Blakes
escape.
