MP Gerald Kaufman |
Call for war crime hearings
A LEADING Labour politician has called on the government
to impose sanctions on Israel if war crime prosecutions against
the killers of Tom Hurndall and British film-maker James Miller,
both shot in Gaza, are blocked.
Writing in The Independent newspaper, MP Gerald Kaufman said
yesterday (Wednesday) that sanctions should be imposed on
what would be a rogue government if Israel refused to
extradite the killers for prosecution in this country or before
an international court.
The former Shadow Foreign Secretary added: Those of us
who have visited the Palestinian territories in recent months
know that there is an element in the Israeli armed forces which
is trigger happy and well nigh out of control.
He said that during a visit by a parliamentary delegation in
November last year three members of the Commons and two members
of the Lords were held at gunpoint by Israeli soldiers, even
after explaining their mission.
Mr Kaufman added: I look to my own British government
to take action on behalf of its own murdered nationals and their
families.
They must ensure that the Israeli government is made to
abide by international law and international decency. |
