Taxis not
exempt from the law
I hope that Camden Council will not be bullied by
threats and disruption caused by taxi drivers who want to be
exempt from obeying the law (Well refuse fares
threat, April 20).
You quote a taxi driver as saying that it is impossible not
to cross into yellow box junctions. What nonsense. Any professional
driver should be able to avoid crossing into a box junction.
All that is needed is to curb their enthusiasm to get as far
ahead as possible at any time.
Before Camden Council started using cameras to fine those who
break the law by entering box junctions, there was chaos and
gridlock at many junctions where drivers including many
taxi drivers ignored the box junction rule, despite everyone
knowing the rule and its purpose. Since the cameras have been
introduced traffic moves more freely and everyone is better
off except those who persist in committing offences.
If motoring laws are not enforced there will be chaos. The calls
for lawlessness on the roads from the taxi profession should
be treated with the contempt they deserve.
