Glynn Roberts with the rusty nail |
Heath's buried treasure a nail
THE years buried under Hampstead Heath mud have not been
kind to it, but a humble, five-inch nail is worth at least £100.
The nail was found buried alongside a path by ponds lifeguard
Glynn Roberts as he trained for Sundays London Marathon.
He has put it up for sale on the auction website eBay to raise
money for charity.
Mr Roberts believes the nail he found by a shaded glen on the
north side of Parliament Hill has a hidden history,
In a cheeky bid to encourage auction bids, he has speculated
on where it may have come from.
He said: I reckon it may have fallen off a stage coach,
perhaps one held up by Dick Turpin. Alternatively, it could
have come from the sarcophagus that held Queen Boadiceas
body and is rumoured to be interred on the Heath.
The nail was unearthed near a Saxon ditch used as a dump.
Heath ecologist Julie Brownbridge said: The Heath is a
fascinating place, steeped in history. It is surprising that
there havent been more finds like this, turned up by the
digging of moles and rabbits.
Whatever the truth behind the oddly-shaped nail, it has attracted
three-figure bids, which will go towards cash Mr Roberts has
already raised by completing Sundays run. |
