REVIEW - SIGUR ROS
Hammersmith Apollo
I HAD my first stab at grown-up music last week, but was
left feeling five years old by the end of the night.
I was immediately made to feel out of place at arty Icelandic
group Sigur Ross gig when I was told off by the rottweiler
in front of me for talking its a gig lady, not
the fricking cinema!
Theres no denying the troupe perform their brand of whale
music well the massive Hammersmith Apollo was full to
capacity with people who take life very seriously.
The pretentious whiff that surrounds this group hit me as I
fidgeted in my seat. You cant shorten their name to make
them sound wacky and fun. They have an album that they didnt
even bother to name. They dont do making money
and wont be involved in anything mainstream.
Lets just say I wouldnt be surprised if they werent
the life and soul of a party if ya-know-whad-I-mean. Oh and
two of their followers Chris and Gwynnie apparently
stuck one of Sigurs epic howling efforts on the record
player as baby Apple was born.
I also came to realise Im actually quite attached to lyrics
after sitting through an evening of Icelandic. And I resented
forking out £2 for a bag of nuts. Small. KP. Wrong.
The self-indulgent sounds of violin bow on guitar also rankled,
while the evening was fittingly concluded by my grumpy bus driver
shouting at me. As I dithered at my stop, he banged on the glass
and yelled: Get off the bus!
Wandering home in the rain, I wished, self-pitying, that Id
never got on it.
