The Prince of Wales Theatre is situated in the right in the heart of London ’s West End , within sight of Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square , and across the way from Chinatown . The ideal location of this great theatre has certainly helped it to have been one of the capital’s best-loved and most successful theatres. Originally built in 1937, the Prince of Wales has recently undergone massive refurbishment and was reopened in 2004 by Charles, the Prince of Wales himself. It now represents a sleek, gleaming example of art deco design both inside and out. Inside, the theatre boasts elegant staircases, large liner-style bars (with pianist during the interval) and bright metal surfaces everywhere. Outside, the building dominates the area like a huge ocean liner towering over Soho .
In the 1930s it was regarded as London ’s equivalent of the Folies Bergere, with shows for “the tired businessman” such as Voila! Les Dames and Les Folies de Paris et Londres. More recently Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Aspects of Love played to more than a million people in well over 1,300 performances. The theatre’s success seems assured for the future. The current show is Mamma Mia! the world-wide hit musical based on the music of ABBA; the show is sold out most nights and now taking bookings over a year in advance. Thank you for the music indeed!
