Founded with the purpose of bringing drama to children, the Young Vic took off under Frank Dunlop’s leadership in 1970. As an off-shoot of the Old Vic Theatre Company it was intended as an experiment, but one that outlived the initial five years it was awarded with. In fact, it was the second time around for the experiment; it had previously run from 1946 to 1951 until financial problems forced it to end.
A home for the fledgling company was constructed from a converted butcher’s shop and a derelict site, a short way down from the Old Vic. It is not the most attractive of buildings but it serves its purpose in bringing experimental, accessible, low cost theatre to young audiences, in an informal environment. Quality has never been sidelined though, some of the best actors have been performed here, including Dame Judi Dench, Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren, Timothy Dalton, Ian McKellen and Jude Law. A multi-million pound transformation of the old building is currently underway and due to be completed in 2006.
