Stallholders’ world of food to choose from
Islington’s Chapel Market stall holder Peter Adamides and Inverness Street’s Tony Chandler have a wide choice of food
TALK about being spoilt for choice! Peter can tuck into piping hot Chinese, Thai, Mediterranean or Caribbean food, and that’s just what’s on offer at stalls in Chapel Market at the Angel.
He’s also surrounded by dozens of good, reasonably priced restaurants, including the newly opened Indian Rooburoo.
When he’s not lobbying for improvements to Chapel Market or serving the public, the former print trade unionist turned chairman of the Stallholders Association will relax with a takeaway. “The difficulty is what to choose,” he says. “Sometimes it will be Thai or Chinese food. Or maybe a jacket potato or a handful of nuts and raisins from the nut stall. A piece of cheese from the cheese stall. We’ve got a jellied eels shop in the market and of course Greek and Turkish food.”
For that special treat on a quiet day he’ll leave someone to look after the stall and slip away to his favourite eatery nearby, Mama Marias. “They do lovely food and I might have a lasagne or rice and roast chicken or a beautiful salad. It is a very friendly restaurant and I can sit outside and watch the market.”
A Greek Cypriot, Peter likes to eat out at Vrisaki Greek restaurant in Palmers Green, where he particularly enjoys the meze.
Over at Inverness Street market in Camden Town, Tony Chandler has been selling fruit and vegetables for 32 years. His day starts with a cup of tea and a piece of toast at 2am which means “lunch” – a favourite is shepherd’s pie – at 5am in New Covent Garden market.
He says: “Working outside gives you an appetite so if I’m really hungry I’ll pop into Bar Solo in the market for a bit of steak done the way I like it with rice and vegetables. The vegetables, incidentally, are all off my stall. “I have my main meal when I get home at 6.30pm, which will normally be a roast. I’ve got a good woman at home who cooks to perfection. “I eat a lot of broccoli because it’s supposed to be healthy. Did I read it was an aphrodisiac? And I’m always nibbling at fruit off the stall. I like the blueberries. Aren’t they supposed to be the new super food?”
