Demo of the Week: Popular Workshop
BIGGEST claim to fame for year-and-a-half old band Popular Workshop is that they were played on rotation in Topshop.
For anyone who understands the corporate pull of that place, it’s pretty big stuff.
And it’s not just the teenagers who like them – all the major airwaves have been indulging in a bit of Popshop play too, along with the trendies and their edgy music mags.
Rated “utterly addictive viewing” by music rag The Stool Pigeon, they were also demo of the month in Spill Magazine, while leading music website Drowned in Sound banged on about them too.
Latest single Sean, a biting anti-love ballad, screams at you, Kelis-style (alright not quite) the hateful line “Sean I don’t want your love!” My poor brother, called Sean, maybe wouldn’t like it, but I challenge anyone else who likes heavily-hooked punky rock to turn their noses up.
Probably as close as it comes to getting a record deal as is possible, you should go and watch them. Now. Then you can brag about it. (Bragging is a good thing).
A split record with The Far Cries (former DotWers), Sean is out on Tigertrap Records.
See Popshop at Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes Friday September 16. £6.
