Classy operas
NEW productions of Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra and Lehar’s The Merry Widow are opening at the UCL Bloomsbury on Thursday, part of a new initiative to present top-class operas at affordable prices.
The company boasts that the highest price ticket will be just £28 and it’s their first appearance in London after a successful debut season last year at Christ’s Hospital Theatre in West Sussex.
Such a proposal has been tried before, with Raymond Gubbay making a not altogether successful attempt to bring popular opera to the West End a couple of years ago.
But this deserves to work. The venue provides a largish stage and a capacity of about 400 and the company features some excellent young soloists.
Verdi’s piece itself is a marvellous work and this production brings it forward from the 14th century and sets it during the Risorgimento period in the late 19th century.
