Amy Winehouse performing at Bar Solo |
Amy knows the way to get heard
INTERVIEW - AMY WINEHOUSE
by Charlotte Chambers
AMY Winehouse spoke to Grooves after her intimate gig at Bar Solo in Inverness Street on Thursday.
The Ivor Novello-winning singer was showcasing material from her new album, Back To Black, out on October 30.
CC: Did the talking tonight bother you?
AW: I thought it was wicked, I like it when people talk through my gig, as long as I can just about hear myself I’m cool.
CC: You don’t get distracted?
AW: No as long as it’s not louder than me.
CC: Only because you said during the gig “Sorry for interrupting your conversation.”
AW: At points it was louder than I could hear myself, but I wanna be playing every night of my life, I love it.
A man from the audience approaches.
AW: You looked after me didn’t you – you were going: “Shut up.”
MAN: I couldn’t believe those ignorant…
AW: I’ve seen worse.
MAN: Do you remember Ronnie Scott? In his club he used to shut people up – he’d get on the mike and say: “Shut the f**k up.”
AW: My grandma was engaged to him. After he died we went down there, did a gig.
I was singing a tune – and I don’t care if people are talking, in fact I like it if people are talking ’cause it gives me a chance to go into one with the band, and my dad was in the audience.
He turned around to whoever was in the audience and said: “Will you shut the f**k up” and this man goes “sorry” and it was Mick Jagger. And my Dad’s like: “It was only Mick Jagger!”
CC: What gigs have you been to in Camden?
AW: I’ve done gigs around here. The Jazz Café would probably be my first and foremost. I’ve seen people like Omar, Mica Paris and Carleen Anderson. I watched her, every soundcheck was as good as the performance. I would sit on the stage like a puppy dog.
CC: Is your Dad a musician?
AW: No he’s not professional but he can sing.
CC: There’s a change in direction musically on Back To Black, why?
AW: I’ve come from Jazz, I’ve come from hip hop, but I haven’t been listening to that this time around, I’ve been listening to ’60s girlgroups, Shangri-Las, Ray Charles, the Specials.
It’s definitely more guitary, it’s more raw, the chords aren’t trying to be as clever.
All the songs I’ve written recently are very basic, it’s not me trying to be consciously more commercial, it’s just what I listened to.
All those ’60s girl groups don’t use more than four chords.
CC: What do you like about Camden?
AW: The thing I love about Camden is it’s raw, you can’t walk down the street without someone telling you something about yourself.
But I don’t live here any more, I’ve just moved away – I only moved away two days ago. I used to play pool in here (The Good Mixer) everyday, and I miss it. I’ve moved to Muswell Hill. It’s not Camden though.
CC: You’re not leaving the Good Mixer then?
AW: Nah, never, I’m part of the furniture, they might as well nail me down.
