Maxwell-Davies’s new quartets performed

ONE of Britain’s greatest composers sees his latest string quartet performed at Wigmore Hall on Wednesday.
The Naxos Quartets were commissioned by the celebrated classical record label and were written by Peter Maxwell-Davies with the Maggini Quartet in mind and they will give the world premiere to number nine, the penultimate of the series, along with the London premiere of number eight.
Before the concert Maxwell-Davies has seen his reputation enhanced considerably in recent years following favourable receptions to his opera Resurrection and the Antarctic Symphony and two years ago when he turned 70 he was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music.
Before the concert, which sees a performance of Naxos Quartet No 7, the composer will give a talk discussing his Naxos series from 6pm.
