Pick of the Indies
THE programme for the 10th annual Jewish Film Festival has been unveiled, and includes a number of British premieres. The event, which starts at the Screen on the Hill in Belsize Park on November 4, includes a preview screening at the Curzon Mayfair of Sixty Six.
It stars Belsize Park-based actors Helena Bonham-Carter and Gregg Sulkin in a film about coming of age. Bernie’s biggest day of his young life is approaching as he prepares for his bar mitzvah. But it just happens to clash with the biggest sporting event the nation has ever seen – the 1966 World Cup final.
Other highlights include a short film by Yoav Segal, which blurs the lines between live action and animation, tells the story of the Battle of Cable Street in London’s East End in 1936.
The opening night gala at the Screen on the Hill features the Dina Rvi-Riklis film Three Mothers about triplets Rose, Flora and Yasmin. The three were born in to a wealthy Egyptian-Jewish family: now they live in an apartment in Israel and this is the story of their lives.
Festival director Judy Ironside said: “In the early years of the festival in Brighton our hopes and aspirations were more focussed on being able to find enough Jewish films to make a programme.
“There has been a significant shift in Jewish-themed film making since that time so that this year we have watched more than 200 films to create the programme.”
