NOTHING works better for a restaurant than word of mouth from satisfied customers.
So when I heard from one of our readers about this restaurant I visited it this week.
At a quiet corner near the entrance fruit, coffee and tea are laid on the floor for their God. You have a feeling that you too will be well looked after.
And indeed you are. TD Bang, the owner, (aka Trieu Dling Bang – Trieu meaning brave) is there all the time supervising every detail on the floor and kitchen.
This ensures that everything runs smoothly and everyone is happy. He greets the customers and helps with service. The regulars look quite at home.
One such customer came in, sat at a table and shortly afterwards a fabulous looking dish was put in front of him. I asked what it was and was told: Spare ribs in spicy sauce over rice. They knew exactly what he wanted.
TD Bang’s enthusiasm is contagious and he is proud of the variety and quality of the food on offer. He set up the restaurant a year ago with the support of his parents and members of his close-knit family.
Sau An serve fine food at very reasonable prices.
We had the crispy lamb with pancakes (£5.50), Vietnamese spring rolls (£3) and satay beef (£3.80), asparagus tips in a light batter, tempura-style; deep-fried baby squid and soft-shell crab (£3 a portion) followed by the Sau Ann house noodle soup (£4.50), special fried rice (£4), king prawns with sweet basil leaf (£6), and crispy rice noodles, with seafood and chicken in sauce, with vegetables, (still crisp despite the hot sauce).
The deep-fried ice cream flambé, with its coating of grated coconut, is a delicious dessert. We tried both their white and red French wine by the glass at £2.50 per glass and they were excellent.
The restaurant is long shaped with the bar at the end and two beautiful black Chinese screens enhancing the beige background of the walls and tables.
It could easily be overlooked by the passer-by. Please don’t as with 166 dishes on the menu you are bound to have an excellent meal that will make you want to come back.
Sau An offer several menus which include a full meal with Chinese tea at £9 per person.
I enjoyed the food and hope that Sau An will do well and be a part of Camden for many years to come.
