Faustus’s contemporary pact
PREVIEW - FAUSTUS
Hampstead Theatre
THE Hampstead Theatre promise a bold retelling of Christopher Marlowe’s 16th-century masterpiece Faust, interweaving the playwright’s infamous anti-hero with a provocative contemporary narrative.
Traditionalists look away. The scene is 21st-century Hoxton and John Faustus, the Medieval German, meets contemporary artists Jake and Dinos Chapman.
They prepare a controversial and provocative new work. As Faustus seals his pact with the devil so the Chapman brothers prepare to rectify a priceless set of etchings and all are forced to confront the power of the irrevocable act.
Two worlds overlap in this subversive modern fable.
This is the London premiere of Rupert Goold’s bold and highly acclaimed production.
Throughout the run of Faustus a display of work by Jake and Dinos Chapman will be shown in Hampstead Theatre’s lower foyer space.
Rupert Goold, who recently directed The Tempest – starring Patrick Stewart for the RSC, is the Prospero of this piece.
All the actors have a wealth of experience in Shakespeare and the classics so it should be interesting to see how they cope with this very modern adaptation.
Faustus runs at the Hamsptead Theatre from October 20 to November 18.
