Godfather can still get on down

REVIEW: James Brown
The Roundhouse
by Mairi Macdonald

AMID the excitement surrounding the BBC Electric Proms, the man who created funk stood out as one not to be missed.
If there was ever a performer that makes you want to leap out of your chair doing inappropriate dance moves it would have to be James Brown.
I heard many pre-gig warnings that the Godfather of Soul, now in his 70s, doesn’t move like he used to and struggles to hit the high notes.
So when he finally strutted on stage in spangly sapphire blue after much Las Vegas-style fanfare, and began busting moves like a young un, I could only assume that some kind-hearted person had upped his daily dosage.
In the two-hour performance he rarely sat down, working his way through everything from Soul Man to Sex Machine and Georgia On My Mind.
And in a bizarre collaboration for the Electric Proms, Max Beasley accompanied Brown on piano and even The Sugababes, grinning like Cheshire cats, came on to do a turn.
Had anyone in the audience needed any spurring on before Brown’s show, they got it with the Zutons, who gave a wholehearted performance.
