Raconteurs left me hankering for Stripes
REVIEW: Raconteurs
Electric Ballroom
YOU know the type – a quietly irritating fellow gig-goer who is always threatening to annoy on a greater scale, and then whoom, the opening chords of a band’s one and only hit kicks in.
In the case of the Raconteurs gig at the Electric Ballroom, as part of the Electric Proms, said irritation started doing the heading the ball move to Steady as She Goes.
Although it was raved about as the best gig of the Proms, for me, it’s a bad sign when the audience only gets excited by a single followed by a cover of The Undertones’ Teenage Kicks.
Even worse, not only were the Raconteurs a disappointment, but frontman Jack White has unimpressed in the past – so it was depressing to find myself hankering for White Stripes’ songs I’d found a struggle the last time around.
Although he’s a class act, his band are simply adequate. They sound better when he’s got the acoustic guitar out, boring when he’s doing twiddling solos for 10 minutes.
