The Galloping Major
THE BELSIZE Park of 50 years ago will come alive again next week as the Everyman Cinema in Hampstead screens a rare classic set in the area.
The Galloping Major, starring a young Sid James of Carry On fame and Basil Radford, is a 1951 comic farce about the efforts of a retired army type to buy a thoroughbred racehorse.
By organising a pool of 300 investors, he raises the cash – but then splurges it on a horse that is fit for the knackers.
But never mind, thinks the Major – he enters the nag in the Grand National. But the twists do not stop there – the horse disappears on the eve of the famous steeplechase leading to yet more fences for the Major to jump.
As well as featuring NW3 as it hasn’t been seen for many years, the film is graced by some of the great British comics, including the likes of Joyce Grenfell, Hugh Griffith, Sydney Tafler and Alfie Bass.
Shot on location by a team from Ealing Studios, it includes some tantalisingly empty streets around the village, and the types of shops that today’s residents would love to have on their doorstep.
• The Galloping Major will be screened Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 November at 11am.
Tickets are £10/£15.
