Tame time for Lily at Astoria

REVIEW - LILY ALLEN
Astoria

THIS is what Lily Allen wrote in her Myspace blog about her Astoria gig.
“Hey, I felt like the Astoria gig sucked, I was really looking forward to coming home and smashing it tonight. After touring the UK for a few weeks, I really thought London was gonna be the best of them all, the icing on the cake, if you like. I put in one of my best performances and they just weren’t feeling it. I feel sad. I hope tomorrow is better. Out. Lily”
Poor Lily! Don’t be so down on yourself – I thought you were pretty damn good.
The fact that her Astoria show was on the back of a three-week tour was obvious, the whole set was tight while the Knock ’Em Out routine was spot on.
The grey tracksuit-bottomed brass trio performed the role of the lecherous skirt-chasing character in the song perfectly, although the girls had been given a raw deal wardrobe wise – especially next to Lily who looked amazing in her badge-encrusted ball gown.
Coming straight back with “So’s your mum” when a cheeky scamp tried to diss her added some healthy excitement to what was an otherwise slightly tame night, mostly livened up by Lily’s enthusiastic swearing and fag smoking.
I say leave off to Lily-baiters who ask “where are you going to go next” – she’s released a cracking debut album, has injected a dose of personality in the heavily male indie-dominated music scene, and the girls like her.
Her second dress – a silver ballgown – seemed to confirm her musical royalty status. Queen of Myspace and fast becoming a pop princess, move over Kylie?
