Dining with the celebs
Where do the celebrities like to eat out? Peter Gruner consults the stars
WHERE do you eat out? Finding a good restaurant with such a lot to choose from is often dependent on word of mouth recommendations from friends and relatives who have similar tastes in food.
So we have asked some of our most prominent people in the world of pop, art, culture, media and politics – who appear regularly in our pages and are in many cases friends of this paper – to suggest their favourite eateries for a new weekly feature on restaurants and cafés.
Camden and Islington have a mouth-watering array of fantastic restaurants representing dozens of different styles and cultures, and in terms of price and quality they can match anything in the West End.
This week we asked Highbury resident, Daily Mail columnist Peter Oborne, and Madness singer Suggs – who lives in Holloway but has associations with Camden Town – to name their choices.
Peter Oborne writes his weekly politics and power column in a small, ordinary-looking Italian café – Trevi’s at Highbury Corner.
“Sometimes you’ve got to get away from the computer,” he said. “I’ll go for a walk and think about an article. I love Trevi’s. The food is simple but great and they do a fantastic egg and bacon sandwich. I go for breakfast when it’s pretty quiet and I can relax, sketch out a few words and enjoy a coffee.”
The Oborne family can also occasionally be spotted at the Parveen Indian restaurant, tucking into a chicken madras or a vegetable curry. But their favourite night out is at San Daniele in Highbury Barn.
Mr Oborne added: “I took my son William there on his 12th birthday as a special treat.
“We spotted Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger having a quiet meal. It was like being at a table with God as far as my son was concerned. William had to have the manager’s autograph.
“Arsene could have been irritated, he must get this all the time. But he was perfectly charming and pleasant. He asked how old William was and happily signed his card.”
MADNESS is making a comeback with a new album. So to celebrate singer Suggs may take his family to St John’s Gastropub in Junction Road, Archway.
The popular traditional English diner with a modern European influence specialises in fish dishes and is proud of its all English cheese boarCustomers include actress Helen Bonham Carter and singer George Michael.
Suggs said: “They never advertise but then they never need to because it is always quite busy. I like St John’s because it’s not too flashy. I’ll normally have a steak as I have simple tastes.
“But they do a nice mixture of fish and meat dishes in a French style. I’ll normally start with a pint of Guinness – well you’ve got to haven’t you – and follow it with a bottle of red wine. The place is an old Methodist hall and I remember they used to have gigs there. I remember standing outside as a little boy and listening to the Small Faces playing back in the 1960s.
“It’s always worth booking to ensure you get a table.”
