DVD of the Week
Miami Vice
Michael Mann’s feature length version of buddy-buddy cop show Miami Vice hits the shelves this week.
Starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as Crockett and Tubbs, it is as tacky as the original series, with plenty of shoot ‘em up violence so beloved of the director who brought us the preposterous gangster flick Heat.
The boys go undercover to smash a drugs cartel, and in doing so find themselves getting deeply embroiled in compromising situations.
Miami comes over as the place the 1990s forgot. Just as neon-lit and appearing to be a cross between Ronald Reagan’s American Dream and a poster from Athena, Miami Vice is not only quite a fun cop film, it will bring waves of nostalgia to those who liked the weekly show in the first place.
