Rain on down
PREVIEW: RAIN PRYOR
Ray’s Jazz
THE daughter of the brilliant hell-raising, comedian Richard Pryor, is appearing at Ray’s Jazz this week performing works from her debut album, Live In London.
While she is yet to court controversy and scandal with the same gusto as her late father, there is something they share, a brutal honesty about themselves and Rain Pryor, with a great and powerful singing voice, has created something really quite impressive. The album is, in many ways, a dedication to her father and she writes movingly about him on her website.
On the record, she covers jazz standards and works by more contemporary musicians such as Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt. This show at Ray’s is a good opportunity to hear her considerable talents for free. – See listings.
