Ocean still marchin’ on
PREVIEW - OCEAN COLOUR SCENE
Astoria
THEY caught the train years ago but they’re still singing about it.
Moseley Shoals, perhaps Ocean Colour Scene’s best-known album, came out in the 90s. It was at that time, living on the dole and supported by one of the band member’s dads, that they were asked to support Paul Weller, at the time of his Wildwood album.
Then Oasis, who were just breaking through, and were well on their way to being the biggest Brit pop band in the world – depending on which camp you pitched your tent Blurites – asked them to join them on tour.
Later on, when their album Marchin Already went to number 1, and chucked the Brit-pop bruisers off the top spot, Noel Gallagher sent them a plaque saying: “Well done to the second-best band in Britain.” Singer Simon Fowler joked: “And as The Beatles are the first-best band in Britain, that was very nice of him.”
Now I know they may not be the world’s most exciting band any more, but around the mid 90s, they were pretty cool, and everyone had Moseley Shoals.
TFI Friday, presented by Chris Evans, nicked The Riverboat Song as the intro music for all top-notch guests, and Kate and Jonny – coolest couple of the decade – were turning up at their gigs.
Having rocked out at three Spanish festivals in September, they’re now embarking on a seven-date UK tour, and they’re gearing up to release their seventh album early next year on their own record label, Moseley Shoals Records – what else?!
Expect to hear all the oldies but goodies at the Astoria on Monday. |
