Demo of the Week
ROEBECK
IF there is any new music act that I would love to hit the big time in 2007, it’s Roebeck. I am biased. Brett Maverick, one half of this chillout dancey duo, used to spin records in empty bars with me. It was a long, long time ago now.
I was working in a tedious job in a library, he was doing something in surveying, so the music was a great escape on a Friday night. But Brett was better, for every rare soul record I produced, he had a rarer one. We went our different ways a few years back and I haven’t seen him for a bit.
When I run into him in the tape exchange I’ll joke that I’m the Pete Best of Roebeck, scrabbling around writing 200 word student-mag style music reviews for a living while he lives the superstar DJ life. I went bald. He got a hip haircut.
But, in truth, it was great to stumble across their music on MySpace. Now with a far more serious partner on the decks in Luke C – you won’t hear them play the Fame theme – Roebeck are clearly an ace partnership.
From the taster tunes released before an album launch early next year, you get a sophisticated blur of chillout keys and spindly guitar. It’s a world a way from when Maverick was known mainly for his vocal house and US garage – and clearly a fusion of a million different influences.
We could have another Groove Armada on our hands. I hope they are a big hit.
Check them out at www.roebeck.co.uk or on their myspace files.
