Mark Borkowski at one of his favourite restaurants |
Mark knows just how to enjoy a long lunch
Broadcaster Joan Bakewell and publicist to the stars Mark Borkowski tell Peter Gruner where they enjoy eating out
MARK Borkowski, whose office is in Clerkenwell, famously shared the longest lunch break ever – lasting a record 18 hours – with conceptual artist Damien Hirst. It began at London’s Groucho club with smoked haddock chowder, and ended with tiramisu at the Da Silvano Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village, New York.
To be fair they also enjoyed a few glasses of bubbly and tucked into various nibbles on the seven-hour transatlantic flight. “It was all done on a whim,” said Mark, who is based in Clerkenwell Road. “I’m afraid I can’t recollect much of the event but I do remember ringing my wife and saying: ‘you’ll never guess where I am.’ I can remember the main course at Da Silvano. I think I had steak au poivre where the meat is coated in coarsely ground pepper before being cooked. It was wonderful.”
When he wants a quick lunch he shares with star Michael Barrymore, a client, a love of the old-fashioned sandwich “bursting with fresh cheese, tomatoes and salad and flavour”. “I can’t stand sandwiches that have been ruined by refrigeration,” he says.
Another of his clients, Noel Edmonds, loves French food and together they will often go to Flaneur, the popular deli and French restaurant, for a plate of monkfish or pasta.
He added: “I’m from an age where PR was all about personal contact. Nowadays people make contact by phone or email. It doesn’t work. I like the personal touch, and I don’t like chain restaurants, which are invariably run by accountants.”
He also visits Fabrizio in St Cross Street, an old-fashioned family run Italian restaurant. “Clerkenwell still has a very big Italian influence. You can feel that love of food,” he says.
Meanwhile Primrose Hill resident Joan Bakewell has a list of favourite establishments in no particular order where she will have lunch or dinner.
They include local restaurants Lemonia, where she often enjoys veal cutlets and Greek salad, Artigiano, for their special recipes from all over Italy, Limani restaurant and the pub restaurant The Engineer.
