The best gigs and albums of 2006
Best Pop Album: Lily Allen – Alright, Still
Everyone’s favourite pop starlet right? Maybe her omnipresence got a little irritating but the album was a winner.
Girls – and boys – couldn’t help but sing along to her ska-infused pop. Lighthearted and summery I said back in July, and I’m still listening to it come Christmas. Happy to be wrong and have a cracking album on my CD shelf.
Best R ’n’ B Album: Rihanna – A Girl Like Me
Barbados-born singing sensation that made it okay to cheat on your partner: “Because I know that he knows I’m unfaithful and it kills him inside/ To know that I am happy with some other guy,” she crooned sweetly on Murderer, arguably the best single from the album and the one she performed at the world music awards.
Best Indie Album: Arctic Monkeys – Whatever I say I Am, That’s What I’m Not
I know the start of the year was ages ago, 12 months to be exact, but these frontrunners would have won any horse race.
Not only 2006 Mercury Winner, but also one of the commercial successes of the year selling over a million copies. You lot didn’t seem to mind who they sound like – you listened anyway.
Best Local Album: Okay this is simply a toss-up between the Amy Winehouse record, Graham Coxon’s and Lily Allen’s – and they were all wicked.
Not to mention Amy and Graham were both pretty cool when I met them. Lily Allen – from Islington – has been too busy. Camdenites Guillemots, The Rifles and The Crimea get a look in too
Best Gig: Brinkman – Dublin Castle, March
This was genuinely an amazing gig. Singer Paul Cook bounded onstage at the Dublin Castle back in March, and said: “Sh*t! I’ve been told to act cool. Guess I’ve blown that.” And eight months later they’re only on the Album Chart Show. And the message there is: even with a flowery shirt, you can be cool.
Now I’m just waiting for the album folks. |
