Cheery music for new year
THIS is always a quiet week in the classical calendar. The major concert venues shutting down for a brief respite before the spring season is launched, leaving churches such as St Martin-in-the-Fields maintaining a regular programme.
Nevertheless there are a number of enticing events over the new-year period that could provide a valuable break from festive commitments.
Both the Barbican and St Martin’s are presenting new year’s galas on January 1. At the Barbican producer Raymond Gubbay is serving up a crowd-pleasing fare with the London Concert Orchestra.
Joined by tenor Julian Gavin and soprano Camilla Roberts, the audience will be treated to rousing versions of Sousa’s Semper Fidelis March, Rossini’s William Tell Overture, Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No 5 and Puccini’s Un bel di, from Madame Butterfly, among other numbers.
Meanwhile at St Martin’s, the Festive Orchestra of London, with violinist and conductor Adrian Chandler, present an equally popular programme including Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Pachelbel’s Canon and Gigue.
All, I’m sure we can agree, very cheery New Year’s Day music. |
