Quirky adaption of Dickens’ tale

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Shaw Theatre

ADAPTING A Christmas Carol for the theatre is a daunting task because it occupies such a central place in the English literary tradition.
For this reason some may consider Chris Pickle’s quirky adaptation of the tale rather frivilous, injecting jollity where none was originally intended.
There is also an attempt at ‘A Christmas Carol: The Musical’ that may not be to everyone’s taste.
But the purists will be pleased to discover that Pickles, who also directed the production, has remained faithful to the dialogue and manages to convey the essence of Dickens’ classic with only a handful of actors and limited stage props at his disposal.
The cast of eight narrates and sometimes sings the story of the miserly Scrooge and his path to redemption with great energy, each taking on a variety of the weird and wonderful characters that people the book.
With only one female, the male actors even double up as women, while a puppet plays the pivotal role of Tiny Tim.
Henry Everett excells as Scrooge, evidently taking inspiration from Alistair Sim’s 1940s film portrayal.
The cast’s exuberance is catching and manages to overcome the rather grim black and white themed stage set, while the ghosts of Christmas Past and Present are among the many big surprises on offer.
