PREVIEW - THE KILLS
SOHO REVUE BAR
ON the eve of releasing their third album, indie rock duo The Kills are to grace the Soho Revue Bar with their presence in a one-off gig next Tuesday.
Promising more of their relentless and compelling sound, the slow, strangely endearing rhythms and powerful hints of blues won’t let go till they take you over.
The band’s forthcoming single, U.R.A. Fever, certainly sets the tone for their next album due for release in March, with a repetitive chorus that, it has to be said, will grow on you, seamlessly blending new elements in terrific, if not hypnotic, bursts of slow garage blues.
The Kills, made up of English guitarist Jamie Hince and American gal Alison Mosshart, merge a perfect combination of British and Floridian rock influences, bringing a post-punk revival to their music while keeping to what suits them best in quirky, adventurous rhythms.
While their previous albums offered that unexpected offbeat approach close to a relentless journey to the valley of death – in other words, a bit depressing – their third album adds a dash of arty depth.
Like their previous albums, Midnight Boom references literature of the not so joyous kind.
Taking inspiration from that renowned “lighthearted” classic, the Russian epic Crime and Punishment, along with a documentary on kids in inner city schools – hard-hitting! – Midnight Boom will fit in just fine, most probably taking the mind to the brink of despair in ever-powerful and mesmerising jolts.
Oh, and don’t forget to look for Kate Moss – Jamie Hince’s other half – in the crowd.
