The boy with the thorn in his side
PREVIEW - MORISSEY
Roundhouse
FOLLOWING his very entertaining spat with NME, England’s self-proclaimed token Englishman does his British thing at the Roundhouse later this month.
Once at the helm of a musical revolution, his band The Smiths sparked a fan-frenzy in his Manchester-scene 80s heyday.
Fast forward 20 years and he is holed up in Rome, apparently because England is too expensive, but he is still creating waves.
Never one to bite the corporate apple, he has made something of a career out of being miserable and anti-everything. Famed for slagging off almost anything with a pulse, he is also one of Britain’s most revered veteran singer-songwriters.
His first British dates since his sold-out tours in 2006, he is likely to showcase new material from his forthcoming solo album, expected in the autumn.
Morrissey is one of our most inspired artists, who like Madonna, goes by just one name (his first name is Steve).
A must-see for all fans and anyone interested in a nice line in controversy. Just don’t turn up reading the NME though, or he might try and sue you.
• Morrissey plays the Roundhouse from January 21-27.
