Pick of the Indies
AH, sweet youth: I recall the fine old days of the late-night screening at the Hampstead Classic cinema in South End Green.
It did not matter what was showing (it was always a big-haired 1980s blockbuster, like Mannequin). It was like going to a drive-in for 1950s teens – the important thing was to be there. Dating couples would huddle together for a snog while gangs of lads would send clouds of smoke into the projector’s beam. Great fun for all concerned!
However, as I have got older, late-night screenings have lost some of their sheen. That is, until I discovered the Curzon’s Midnight Movies Club, which starts again this month and allows you to watch movies into the early hours each weekend.
It’s a winner for a number of reasons: first, the Curzon Soho has very comfortable seats. Second, with a nice bar, live music and a party atmosphere beforehand, you can mingle with other projector-heads before going inside.
Number three: the stuff they put on is hilarious. They have a special feature picked from cult classics, trashy thrillers and arthouse favourites, but before the main course you get a low-budget offering, which members of the Midnight Movies Club can help choose by emailing the cinema and uploading their favourite clips of footage they believe are worthy of sharing.

Meanwhile, I must draw your attention to another marriage between film and partying on Friday night at the Grand Union bar in Highgate Road, Kentish Town. The clever people there have a couple of DJs playing tunes (me and my mate Colin) while they play 3-D movies on a big screen.
This week’s offerings were Shrek and Spy Kids – the big green swamp monster looked superbly comic at around midnight.
Throw in the fact the bar has the world’s most comfortable sofas, a jolly late licence and some old-school computer consoles – Super Nintendo, anyone? – available in darkened recesses, and it’s hardly surprising I felt tired yet satisfied on Saturday morning. The next night, which has a £3 door price, is on Friday March 7. Be there!
