ONE of the many roles of the Torriano Meeting House, is nurturing local artistic talent. And they don’t come much more local than Marie Mackay and Christopher Jones. Marie and Christopher are neighbours just around the corner from the Meeting House.
Marie was a highly accomplished photographer, but now creates what she calls
lens-based painting.
Her centrepiece at the Meeting House is a picture called Play World (see right) which is created from homes out of glossy estate agents’ sales magazines and fairytale hotels and swimming pools from travel brochures. “Much of our world is out of bounds and the property of some anonymous others,” she says. “Making a playworld, I suddenly get to own and inhabit the world again, like the dinosaurs.”
Christopher Jones’s watercolour drawings and paintings (one of which is pictured right) explore the wonder of natural habitats and how we can be consumed by the awe of our surroundings.
Their show at Torriano is down to a chance encounter in the street with the Meeting House’s John Rety. And that sort of ease of access is one of the things that makes the Meeting House such a community gem.
