The Review - MUSIC - grooves with CHARLOTTE CHAMBERS Published: 27 March 2008
THE best thing going on this weekend – why wasn’t it last weekend, bank holiday and all that – is easily Proud Camden re-opening.
The closure of At Proud in the Gin House, also in Stables Market, left a gaping hole in the Camden scene.
While its magnificent terrace cannot be bettered, the new Horse Hospital site is twice the size inside and still has a significant roof garden.
But what’s better than the Proud terrace? Well it has to be the Mucha Marcha club night on Friday, featuring the best band in Camden – The More Assured (see interview). When I met Slinky (who doesn’t give his real name because everybody knows him as Slinky) he admitted Proud can be a “too cool for school” place, but only because it’s so damn good that all the celebs want to go there.
And although the excessively preened are sometimes a distracting feature of the place, I can look past that and see it for what it is – a great place to go and listen to cool bands.
Despite attempts by me and Slinky to get a sneak preview inside the new venue, we were firmly told it was a hard hat area only. This means the paint will likely still be drying when NME Best Band The Enemy headline at the Another Music = Another Kitchen opening night on Thursday.
They most certainly won’t die in this town and, even better, money raised on the night will go towards victims of the Camden fire last month.
