Grooves
THE other night I bumped into a very nice man at a bus stop. He was busy handing out flyers for a jazz night he hosts called Jazz Blow.
Held on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Oh Bar! in Camden High Street, it’s free and features a line-up of artists from his Panache Artistes stable.
“It’s a hard business, promotion,” he told me wearily, as the rain lashed down.
I couldn’t help but be filled with admiration for him as he clutched his folder full of flyers and a soggy paper to keep his goods dry.
But if anyone thinks a jazz showcase in a bar will be filled with nobodies just to keep the punters going, they’d be wrong.
Mr promoter had been all the way to Catford that day to hear a saxophonist. “They were good, but unfortunately not good enough,” he told me wistfully.
As the bus came he made a wise a decision to give up the ghost for the night and headed for the same bus as me.
But as he made his way up the stairs, he popped his head back down and shouted “please come!”
Sad to say I missed it, but I thought I’d tell everyone else about it.
He also holds another night at the Chapel Bar in Penton Street, Angel, on the first Thursday of every month. No excuse now, is there!
CORRECTION: Last week Grooves announced the reopening of Camden Proud. Unfortunately we published the wrong date. It actually opens its doors for the first time tonight (Thursday April 3) and tomorrow.
